Dissertation Title: Effects of Gender and Color on Verbal Memory
Abstract
Ability of human memory to store and retrieve information is dependent on different environmental factors. This study expects to understand the key factors that influence ability of individuals to recall background texts. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to determine the influence of color on memory. A primary qualitative research following an exploratory design was adopted in this study. A cohort of 50 participants was recruited through sampling method of convenience to take part in the study. The participants were divided into two distinct groups, groups A and B, and data was collected per group based on their recall of the nouns when on different backgrounds and when on a red background. The study outcomes were analyzed using inferential and descriptive statistics techniques. Descriptive findings demonstrated a higher number of the recalled words which were presented on red background during the encoding phase. However, there was a significant difference in the level of perception of words among females in group A compared to group B. Furthermore, more males than females in group B remembered the words under the blue and red backgrounds. Despite a statistically insignificant association between color perception and memory concerning gender in Group A, an analysis of Group B results showed that gender can predict color perception. Results demonstrated that females had higher recall rate of words on different backgrounds than males. Therefore, it is justifiable to note that females are likely to recall texts on either blue or red backgrounds than males, hence an indication that gender is an important factor that influence ability of an individual to recall background text.
