Dissertation Title: Trade Under Tension – Assessing the Influence of Global Sanctions on Russia’s International Specialisation and Market Dynamics

Abstract

The illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia has greatly influenced decisions of the Western countries to impose unprecedented financial sanctions as well as export controls against Russia.  The primary purpose of this study was to assess the influence of global sanctions on Russia’s international specialisation and market dynamics. In order to achieve this purpose, a secondary quantitative research methodology was adopted. The data were collected from the Atlantic Council’s Russia Sanctions Database and then analysed using Stata software. Results from the conducted analysis revealed that such measures generally aimed to achieved three key objectives such as ensuring significant reduction of revenue volumes of Russia from the commodities exports, negatively influence Russia’s military capabilities as well as the ability to pursue war, and impose significant negatively effects on the Russian economy. Despite the sanctions, it is evident that Russia received significant revenues from its oil exports.
