About Community Nursing Literature Reviews
- Main focus: Community and district nursing reviews look at care delivered in people’s homes, clinics and care settings outside hospital.
- Typical topics: Leg ulcer and wound care, end-of-life care at home, self-management of long-term conditions, remote monitoring and hospital-at-home services.
- People and carers: Many reviews examine caregiver burden, social isolation and how nurses coordinate care across health and social services.
- Evidence and databases: Searches combine CINAHL and PubMed/MEDLINE with grey literature from organisations such as the Queen’s Nursing Institute.
- What to learn from them: See how to frame questions about complex, real-world care where settings and services vary widely.
Writing Your Own Community Nursing Literature Review
- Start with a focused question: Narrow your topic to one population, intervention or experience and frame it with PICO, PEO or PCC. A focused question keeps the search manageable and makes your inclusion criteria easy to justify.
- Plan a reproducible search: Combine subject headings and keywords with Boolean operators across at least two or three relevant databases, and record the date of each search and the number of results. Markers expect enough detail for someone else to repeat it.
- Appraise every included study: Use a recognised tool such as CASP, JBI or MMAT to judge each study’s quality, and explain how strengths and weaknesses affect the confidence you place in the findings.
- Synthesise into themes: Group findings by what they reveal about your question, compare where studies agree or disagree, and explain why. Avoid summarising one study per paragraph.
- Link back to practice: Finish with clear, realistic implications for community nursing practice, education or policy, and identify the gaps future research should address.
