About Critical Care Nursing Literature Reviews
- Main focus: Critical care reviews examine nursing care for critically ill adults in intensive and high-dependency units.
- Typical topics: ICU delirium, ventilator-associated pneumonia, sedation and weaning, early mobilisation, pressure injuries and family involvement.
- Care bundles and protocols: Many reviews appraise bundles, checklists and nurse-led protocols and judge how consistently they are applied.
- Evidence and databases: Searches usually include CINAHL, PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Library, with Intensive Care Society guidance.
- What to learn from them: See how to handle complex clinical outcomes and turn them into clear recommendations for bedside practice.
Writing Your Own Critical Care Nursing Literature Review
- Start with a focused question: Narrow your topic to one population, intervention or experience and frame it with PICO, PEO or PCC. A focused question keeps the search manageable and makes your inclusion criteria easy to justify.
- Plan a reproducible search: Combine subject headings and keywords with Boolean operators across at least two or three relevant databases, and record the date of each search and the number of results. Markers expect enough detail for someone else to repeat it.
- Appraise every included study: Use a recognised tool such as CASP, JBI or MMAT to judge each study’s quality, and explain how strengths and weaknesses affect the confidence you place in the findings.
- Synthesise into themes: Group findings by what they reveal about your question, compare where studies agree or disagree, and explain why. Avoid summarising one study per paragraph.
- Link back to practice: Finish with clear, realistic implications for critical care nursing practice, education or policy, and identify the gaps future research should address.
