About Public Health Nursing Literature Reviews

  • Main focus: Public health nursing reviews examine how nurses promote health and prevent illness at population and community level.
  • Typical topics: Vaccination uptake, smoking cessation, school nursing, sexual health, obesity prevention, health visiting and outbreak management.
  • Inequalities: Many reviews consider the social determinants of health and how programmes reach underserved groups.
  • Evidence and databases: Searches combine CINAHL and PubMed/MEDLINE with WHO, UKHSA and NICE public health guidance.
  • What to learn from them: See how to frame prevention questions and judge whether findings apply in different communities.

Writing Your Own Public Health Nursing Literature Review

  • Start with a focused question: Narrow your topic to one population, intervention or experience and frame it with PICO, PEO or PCC. A focused question keeps the search manageable and makes your inclusion criteria easy to justify.
  • Plan a reproducible search: Combine subject headings and keywords with Boolean operators across at least two or three relevant databases, and record the date of each search and the number of results. Markers expect enough detail for someone else to repeat it.
  • Appraise every included study: Use a recognised tool such as CASP, JBI or MMAT to judge each study’s quality, and explain how strengths and weaknesses affect the confidence you place in the findings.
  • Synthesise into themes: Group findings by what they reveal about your question, compare where studies agree or disagree, and explain why. Avoid summarising one study per paragraph.
  • Link back to practice: Finish with clear, realistic implications for public health nursing practice, education or policy, and identify the gaps future research should address.
