About Paediatric Nursing Literature Reviews
- Main focus: Children’s nursing reviews examine care for babies, children and young people, with families treated as partners in care.
- Typical topics: Pain assessment, play and distraction, fever management, childhood asthma and diabetes, safeguarding and the transition to adult services.
- Family-centred care: Reviews often weigh the views of children, parents and nurses together, showing how each group experiences the same intervention differently.
- Evidence and databases: Searches usually combine CINAHL and PubMed/MEDLINE with child-specific terms and age filters, plus guidance from NICE and the RCPCH.
- What to learn from them: See how to adapt review questions and appraisal to developmental stage, consent and the involvement of parents.
Writing Your Own Paediatric Nursing Literature Review
- Start with a focused question: Narrow your topic to one population, intervention or experience and frame it with PICO, PEO or PCC. A focused question keeps the search manageable and makes your inclusion criteria easy to justify.
- Plan a reproducible search: Combine subject headings and keywords with Boolean operators across at least two or three relevant databases, and record the date of each search and the number of results. Markers expect enough detail for someone else to repeat it.
- Appraise every included study: Use a recognised tool such as CASP, JBI or MMAT to judge each study’s quality, and explain how strengths and weaknesses affect the confidence you place in the findings.
- Synthesise into themes: Group findings by what they reveal about your question, compare where studies agree or disagree, and explain why. Avoid summarising one study per paragraph.
- Link back to practice: Finish with clear, realistic implications for paediatric nursing practice, education or policy, and identify the gaps future research should address.
