About Mental Health Nursing Literature Reviews
- Main focus: Mental health nursing reviews explore the therapeutic relationship, recovery and the safety of people using mental health services.
- Typical topics: De-escalation and restrictive practice, suicide risk assessment, self-harm, trauma-informed care, stigma, peer support and early intervention in psychosis.
- Mixed evidence: They often combine trials and observational studies with qualitative research on service users’ and staff experiences.
- Evidence and databases: PsycINFO is searched alongside CINAHL and PubMed/MEDLINE, with links to NICE mental health guidance.
- What to learn from them: See how to integrate different study designs and present sensitive findings in a respectful, person-centred way.
Writing Your Own Mental Health Nursing Literature Review
- Start with a focused question: Narrow your topic to one population, intervention or experience and frame it with PICO, PEO or PCC. A focused question keeps the search manageable and makes your inclusion criteria easy to justify.
- Plan a reproducible search: Combine subject headings and keywords with Boolean operators across at least two or three relevant databases, and record the date of each search and the number of results. Markers expect enough detail for someone else to repeat it.
- Appraise every included study: Use a recognised tool such as CASP, JBI or MMAT to judge each study’s quality, and explain how strengths and weaknesses affect the confidence you place in the findings.
- Synthesise into themes: Group findings by what they reveal about your question, compare where studies agree or disagree, and explain why. Avoid summarising one study per paragraph.
- Link back to practice: Finish with clear, realistic implications for mental health nursing practice, education or policy, and identify the gaps future research should address.
